MUMBAI - India's most successful bowler Anil Kumble announced his retirement from one-day cricket on Friday, a day after returning from the World Cup in the Caribbean.
The 36-year-old leg-spinner played in 271 one-day internationals, making his debut in April 1990, and took 337 wickets for seventh on the all-time list.
India's highest wicket-taker in tests and one-day cricket, Kumble played in four World Cups from 1996. He captained his country in one one-day international, against England in Chennai in 2002.
He told a news conference in his hometown of Bangalore he would still be available to play test cricket.
Kumble had played one-day cricket sporadically after the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, where India finished runners-up to Australia, before being recalled for this year's tournament.
Nick-named 'Jumbo', the Karnataka spinner played against Bermuda in India's only victory in the West Indies World Cup. They went out in the first round after losing to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
In one-dayers, Kumble took four or more wickets in an innings on eight occasions and his best figures were six for 12 off 6.1 overs against the West Indies in Kolkata in November 1993.
Kumble has four test fifties to his credit, but did not really show his usefulness with the bat in one-dayers, finishing with a tally of 938 runs.
A match-winner in tests, the unorthodox leg-spinner claimed 24 wickets in three tests on the 2003-04 tour of Australia.
A few months later, he took six for 71 at Multan to help India register their first series victory in Pakistan.
Last year, Kumble took six second-innings wickets to help India win the fourth and final test in Jamaica and clinch their first series triumph in the Caribbean for 35 years.
But he will be remembered for taking all 10 wickets in a test innings -- only the second bowler after England's Jim Laker to achieve the feat -- against Pakistan in New Delhi in 1999.
