Fears fast bowlers becoming an endangered species

New Zealand's selection tactics have been brilliant for their world T20 chances but are a bad trend for the game.

That's the view of commentator David Lloyd who told RadioSport's The Crowd Goes Wild he is concerned about the great fast bowlers becoming an endangered species in the shortest form of cricket.

"Look at South Africa - they leave Dale Steyn out," said Englishman Lloyd on the eve of the T20 semifinals in India.

"England leave (Jimmy) Anderson and (Stuart) Broad at home. (Trent) Boult and (Tim) Southee don't play. Maybe it is because this is in India, but you just get anyone to bowl slow. Get a couple of spinners on, and they don't even have to be world class.

"Kane Williamson has come out of this as a very astute captain along with the coaches, with a formula that definitely works.

"It doesn't surprise me, but it does worry me. These are fantastic bowlers being left out. I just watched Steyn racing in and getting clattered and you can see the look on his face."

Lloyd shied away from semifinal predictions, but said the West Indies were delighted at playing India in Mumbai (Friday morning NZ time). On form, it could be a straight batting clash between Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli.

"West Indies are ecstatic playing at Mumbai - anywhere else if it started spinning I wouldn't give them a hope," he said.

"Mumbai is a good pitch where you find the boundary, and they've got boundary finders big time. They are not interested in ones and twos. They are just going to smack it."

Likewise, England are happy to be playing their semifinal in Delhi (Thursday morning NZ time).

"This is where they have been playing and it's a good pitch. New Zealand have been all over India," said Lloyd.

"England have scored the most runs and conceded the most while New Zealand have conceded less than anyone in the competition so it is a good match up.

"England have taken things by the scruff of the neck and Andrew Strauss (director of cricket) has appointed his own people. There is a downside because it means no Kevin Pietersen in the team...but they play with no fear which has not been the way in the past.

"There was a bit of head shaking against Afghanistan which is a bit of an English trait and I know (coach) Trevor Bayliss jumped on them about that."
