South Africa's great fast bowler Dale Steyn is out of the tour of New Zealand because of a shoulder injury.
The 33-year-old Steyn, who has taken more than 400 test wickets, had surgery in Cape Town and will need at least six months of rehabilitation before starting to bowl again.
Steyn felt his shoulder go during the test match in Perth telling Channel Nine: "I felt this pop or like a thud in my shoulder. There was a lot of pain.
"I did something very similar against England in December in a similar area but it wasn't as bad. That was a stress reaction, which is like a very hairline little crack. This time it's more like a fracture. It's kind of broken the whole bone."
South Africa begin their tour of New Zealand in mid-February with a T20 game, and play five one-dayers and three test matches. Steyn has been troubled by injury in the past year or so, including a groin complaint. But on his return in August, he appeared to be heading back into good form with eight wickets against New Zealand at Centurion where South Africa scored a crushing 204 run victory.
