Cricket: Windies beat NZ by five wickets

The West Indies have won a rain-affected second one-day cricket international against New Zealand by five wickets at AMI Stadium tonight.

Set a revised 158 from a maximum of 28 overs after New Zealand had made 152 for eight, the West Indies reached the target with one ball remaining.

Ramnaresh Sarwan struck the winning run off Tim Southee to be unbeaten on 67 from 65 balls. Denesh Ramdin was unbeaten on 28 from 18 balls, the pair sharing a crucial 48-run stand from 33 balls as they reached 159 for five.

Earlier opener Jesse Ryder top scored with 32 for New Zealand while Grant Elliott (30 not out) and Jacob Oram (25) added some late impetus.

Pace bowler Fidel Edwards was the leading West Indian bowler with three for 26 from six overs.

A four hour rain delay reduced the contest to 28 overs per side, with the West Indies target revised slightly upwards under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

The series opener in Queenstown on New Year's Eve was abandoned after 35.4 overs due to bad weather.

The third match is scheduled for Wellington's Westpac Stadium on Wednesday. The New Zealand squad is unchanged for the match.
