Daniel Vettori will sit out Thursday evening's Twenty-20 cricket match at Eden Park.
The spinner has been left out of the 12-man Black Caps squad for the match against Australia as a precaution.
Vettori insists his back injury is fine and he will be OK to play in the rest of the series, but he cannot afford to risk it in what is, essentially, an exhibition match.
He said the fact he would have been going out to bowl four overs and getting slogged is not really the ideal preparation for one-dayers and tests.
Meanwhile, the Australian cricketers are keen to complete some unfinished business.
The Australians arrived in town late on Wednesday for the five one-dayers and three tests, as well as the inaugural Twenty-20 international match.
