KEY POINTS:
NORTHAMPTON - New Zealand lost three early wickets before stumps after a Tim Southee five-wicket haul put them in charge of the three-day cricket tour match against Northamptonshire here today.
New Zealand were 38 for three in their second innings, an overall lead of 187 after Peter Fulton,
Aaron Redmond and James Marshall fell cheaply just before the close of day two.
The trio were removed by Northants seamer Dave Wigley who took three for three in 21 balls late in the day, to go with his first innings haul of five for 78.
Marshall was caught behind for two, after his 11 in the first innings, to leave him worryingly short of runs in the leadup to the third test against England in Nottingham next Thursday.
Southee meanwhile pushed his claims for a recall with his third five-wicket haul in a first-class career spanning just 17 matches.
The 19-year-old Northlander took five for 42 off 16.4 overs as Northants were dismissed for 214 in reply to New Zealand's first innings of 363.
Fellow paceman Kyle Mills took some late wickets to end with three for 41 off 15 overs.
South African Johann Louw, who smashed 82 off 90 balls, and Ireland's World Cup batsman Niall O'Brien, who scored 60, frustrated New Zealand's bowlers.
