Mark Gillespie has been ruled out of contention for the second cricket test against Bangladesh after suffering a recurrence of a shoulder injury playing for Wellington against Auckland yesterday.
The right arm pace bowler had been making a comeback from an injury sustained after one over of the
second one-day international against the tourists in Napier on December 28.
He came through one State Shield match unscathed, taking four for 49 against Otago, but problems with his left shoulder flared again in Auckland yesterday.
Gillespie left Eden Park after two balls into his fifth over and unsurprisingly did not appear at New Zealand's first training session at the Basin Reserve today.
Iain O'Brien and Michael Mason are in contention for the third seamer's role - an assignment O'Brien carried out during the Black Caps nine-wicket win in Dunedin last weekend.
Wellington spinner Jeetan Patel is also in the mix, dependent on pitch conditions.
The test, which marks the end of Bangladesh's tour, starts on Saturday.
