DHAKA - James Franklin became just the second New Zealander to take a test cricket hat-trick as his team took firm control of the first against Bangladesh.
Franklin's devastating spell of three for three in the opening session of the second day helped skittle Bangladesh
for 177 from 98.5 overs after they resumed on 165 for six.
In reply at lunch New Zealand were 54 for one, with Mathew Sinclair not out 27 and Stephen Fleming on 11.
Franklin triggered the Bangladeshi collapse in only the second over of the day as the hosts lasted just 8.5 more overs in the morning session.
The Wellington left-armer ended with five for 28 from 17 overs -- his first test five-wicket bag.
Peter Petherick was the first New Zealand bowler to take three wickets with consecutive balls, in the first test against Pakistan at Lahore in 1976 at the age of 34.
Today at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Franklin's strike began with the fifth ball of his first over, the second of the day.
He removed overnight batsmen Mohammad Islam when he edged to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum. Mohammad Rafique then pushed at Franklin's sixth delivery with Scott Styris taking the catch at second slip.
On the first ball of Franklin's second over, Tapash Baisya failed to offer a shot only to watch the ball smash into his off-stump with Bangladesh reeling at 165 for nine.
Oram claimed the final Bangladeshi scalp of Tareq Aziz to end with figures of three for 36 from 22.5 overs while Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud was not out on 23.
After fielding for just over 40 minutes, the Blacks Caps bolted early in their run chase.
Openers Mark Richardson and Sinclair piled on 31 runs in six overs as the Bangladesh pace attack rarely threatened.
Mashud then pulled a master stroke when he introduced spinner Mohammad Rafique with immediate success.
Richardson edged to wicketkeeper Mashud, with New Zealand losing their first wicket at 34.
But despite the early loss the session easily belonged to Franklin who has now taken 18 wickets from four tests.
