Pakistan innings

1. Ross Taylor drops Mohammad Hafeez
0.3 overs; - Pakistan scamper to one for none.
The Pakistan captain offered a regulation slip catch on the third ball of the match from Kyle Mills. Taylor looked at Mills in disbelief; Mills' disposition darkened. It was a surprise error from the man with most catches (27) in T20 internationals. The mistake cost New Zealand 43 runs. Taylor claims he was mulling over who should bowl the second over...

2. Nasir Jamshed six off Adam Milne
7.6 overs; Pakistan move to 73 for one
No. 3 Jamshed showed he is another of a long line of Pakistani batsmen with an ingrained knack of timing. When late call-up Adam Milne dropped short, the sweet spot of Jamshed's bat was there to hook him for six over fine leg. The majesty was in the 22-year-old left-hander's swivel which got him into a position to flay it.

3. Jamshed caught at long on
15.4 overs; Pakistan stumble to 134 for four
Daniel Vettori coaxing Jamshed into the shot completed a New Zealand stymie. Earlier their position looked ominous with Pakistan 118 for one after 13 overs (a run rate of 9.07). Yet they hauled themselves back with three wickets in 13 balls. The other two came from James Franklin (Hafeez slogging across the line) and Jacob Oram (Nicol catching Kamran Akmal on the cover boundary).

New Zealand innings

4. Vettori bats at four instead of Taylor
7.3 overs- New Zealand 54 for two
If Pakistan had done this, eyebrows would have been raised. Why would Vettori, reliable batsman that he is, come in ahead of a man paid over US$1 million a season in the Indian Premier League for his dashing strokeplay. Taylor claims it was to break up the bowling rhythm with a left-hand/right-hand combination. The fact Taylor didn't appear for another 7.5 overs surely defeated the purpose?

5. Trickling ball dislodges McCullum bail
15.1 overs; New Zealand slips to 108 for four.
McCullum could be considered unlucky; he played a yorker onto his boot from Umar Gul. It ballooned and landed with enough momentum to dislodge a bail. Queen's Under Pressure pumped appropriately from the PA system. Given McCullum's form this was the turning point which led to defeat. His 32-run innings off 31 balls was tantalising but not enough to change the game.
