KEY POINTS:
WELLINGTON - New Zealand have crushed Bangladesh by an innings and 137 runs, to win the second cricket test at the Basin Reserve here today and sweep the series 2-0.
Bangladesh, resuming at a forlorn 51 for five on day three, needed 199 to make New Zealand bat
again but predictably fell well short, capitulating for 113, 15 minutes before the scheduled lunch break.
Veteran Habibul Bashar was out to the fifth ball of the morning, adding a streaky boundary to his overnight score of 21, before he was given out leg before wicket to the bowling of man of the match Chris Martin.
Shakib Al Hasan and Shahadat Hossain then added 23 for the seventh wicket though Shakib had a slice of fortune on 20 when Matthew Bell muffed his third catch of the match, again leaving Wellington teammate Iain O'Brien as the unlucky bowler.
But the pace bowler had success in his next over in a stiff northerly when Shahadat Hossain (5) feathered an edge to the gloves of Brendon McCullum.
Sajidul Islam (3) was then needlessly run out after a mix-up with Shakib before the allrounder, who top scored with an unbeaten 41, and Mushrafe Mortaza added the most productive stand of the innings -- 30 for the ninth wicket.
The pair's resistance at least carried the tourists past their lowest total against New Zealand -- the 108 made in their inaugural test at Hamilton in December 2001.
Mortaza was the last wicket to fall when he was caught by Kyle Mills in the covers off Jacob Oram for six.
Bangladesh's second innings ended when the ninth wicket fell as in form opener Tamim Iqbal was unable to bat after fracturing a thumb when dropping a catch yesterday.
Martin was named man of the match on the strength on his five for 65 in the first innings, a haul instrumental in routing Bangladesh for 143 in their first innings.
New Zealand replied with 393 -- captain Daniel Vettori leading the way with 94 while former skipper Stephen Fleming notched his 43rd test half century before departing on 87.
New Zealand won the first test in Dunedin last week, also inside three days, by nine wickets.
By winning both tests, New Zealand extend their unbeaten record over Bangladesh to six tests since their rivalry began in 2001-02. The Black Caps also swept the preceding one-day series 3-0.
New Zealand next host England in February-March while Bangladesh head home to prepare for South Africa's arrival, also next month.
