KEY POINTS:

NOTTINGHAM - England bowling star James Anderson felt New Zealand's attacking approach was their downfall as he scythed through their top-order on a gloomy second day of the third cricket test at Trent Bridge.

Having to chase the game, needing victory to claim a 1-1 test series draw,
New Zealand collapsed to 77 for five in reply to England's over par first innings of 364.

It was a similar story for the hosts who crumbled to 86 for five on day one before Stuart Broad and Anderson's highest test scores of 64 and 28 helped add 278 for the final five wickets.

All the pre-match talk was about the swing-friendly conditions at Trent Bridge and so it proved, with Anderson the destroyer as he took the first six wickets to fall. He had figures of six for 42 as New Zealand staggered to 96 for six.

Aaron Redmond, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor were all removed trying to attack while opener Jamie How looked in good touch, hitting seven fours in his innings of 40 off 79 balls before edging an outswinger.

"It's a different game when the ball's swinging and they're quite aggressive batsmen," Anderson said.

"We saw at Old Trafford it didn't really swing that much and they do play their shots, so when the ball swings you think you've got that extra chance of getting the edge."

Technique against the swinging ball is a regular question mark over New Zealand's top order.

Batting coach Mark O'Neill was on tour for the first two tests, before being replaced in the support staff rotation by psychologist Gary Hermansson after the six-wicket defeat at Old Trafford.

Redmond and McCullum both tried to hit Anderson against the swing through the leg side to be gone inside the first six overs.

The batting lineup also had a makeshift look, with 56 test caps among the top six.

McCullum, easily the most experienced with 34 caps, was promoted to No 3 on account of his dodgy back, Daniel Flynn was promoted to No 5 and lasted just three balls and Gareth Hopkins was elevated to No 6 on test debut as New Zealand sought to alternate their left and right-handers.

Yesterday's effort continued the batting struggles in the series to date.

The first four wickets have fallen for 76 and 115 at Lord's, 123 and 85 at Old Trafford.

How, New Zealand's most consistent batsman in the series, had to concede they had no answer to Anderson.

"Losing wickets in clumps doesn't help, particularly today when Jimmy gets his tail up and the ball's swinging around in the gloomy light it wasn't easy out there," How said.

"He swung the ball nicely, both ways, he bowled good lines and basically put us under a good amount of pressure.

"He's a good bowler when he gets his tail up and it's up to us to find a way of combating him a bit better."

Anderson, 25, celebrated his best day of test cricket after playing his first 25 tests with his potential largely unfulfilled.

He showed his knowledge of the New Zealand batsmen, none more so than allrounder Jacob Oram whom he rated his most satisfying dismissal despite ripping Redmond and McCullum's off stumps out of the ground.

"I'd have to say Oram because I've worked quite hard on getting my outswinger right to the left-hander from around the wicket.

"Ryan (Sidebottom) caused him a bit of trouble and it was a similar angle. I've worked quite hard in trying to get that, I enjoyed it."
