CHITTAGONG - The ability of the Bangladeshi batsmen to self destruct saw New Zealand stroll to a 138-run victory in the first one-day cricket international today.
Bangladesh imploded as they were dismissed for 86 in 31.5 overs in reply to the tourists' 224 from 49.2 overs.
From the outset poor shot selection saw the hosts collapse to 27 for four after nine overs on a MA Aziz Stadium pitch offering minimal movement to the seamers.
Opening bowler Kyle Mills was not complaining though as he snatched figures of four for 14 from seven overs, his best return in 34 one-dayers for his country.
Left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori also delighted in his international captaincy debut, taking three for eight from 3.5 overs at the end of the innings.
It took just the third ball of Bangladesh's innings for the slide to set in when Mills trapped Aftab Ahmed leg before wicket after he hit him for four first ball.
Fellow opener Javed Omar threw his wicket away on three when he skied a catch to Peter Fulton at third man in Mills' second over.
Ten for two became 22 for three when Rajin Saleh tried to flick Mills to mid wicket only to send the ball directly to Craig McMillan.
Mohammad Ashfraful completed the early demolition when he stood and waved his bat for wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum to glove an easy catch.
Scott Styris benefited from two leg before wicket decisions from English umpire Mark Benson when replays showed both deliveries landed outside the line of the off stump.
When Khaled Mashud was trapped for two after captain Habibul Bashar was removed in the same fashion from Styris' previous over for a tedious 22, the match was effectively over with BVangladesh slumped at 51 for six after 20 overs.
Manzaural Rana then typified the dismissals when he lunged, with feet planted, at a wide Vettori delivery which popped up to Styris at first slip.
The remaining three wickets fell for just 18 runs.
The second and third one-dayers are in Dhaka on Friday and Sunday.
