Andrew Alderson breaks down the best bits from the second day of the third test between the Black Caps and Pakistan in Sharjah.
Important moment: Images can be so much more powerful than words and it's hard to think of a more poignant mark of respect to the late PhilHughes, than the teams resting their respective green and black caps on their bats next to the boundary rope for the day.
Best shot: McCullum watched Zulfiqar Babar go wide of the crease and turned the delivery into a leather cannonball which had those in the prime wicket-to-wicket seats diving or catching. Attempts at the latter left sore fingers. He advanced to 71 off 48 in the 18th over.
Ball of the day: Not so much the ball but the result. Rahat Ali used the short ball merrily and Tom Latham eventually hooked. Looked safe until a gloved bullet called Sarfraz Ahmed ran 30m to backward square leg to take a diving catch. It was a Snedden-MCG-1981 type moment, except Latham, unlike Greg Chappell, was actually out.
That's quirky: Not really a quirky kind of day, wouldn't you say?
Tweet as: Steve Smith ?@stevesmithffx A frail Richie Benaud voicing a 30-second tribute to Phillip Hughes has done me in. Jesus. https://amp.twimg.com/v/71e314c9-c61b-40e1-b6b0-5ae018ab72b9 ...
Darren Lehmann ?@darren_lehmann Loved what NZ and Pakistan cricket teams have done today! #408forever Thanks from all in Australia!
Stats all: Brendon McCullum's century in 78 balls eclipses Ross Taylor's previous quickest against Australia in 2010 by three deliveries.
Testometer: New Zealand 75:25 - Pakistan were dominated in all three sessions of a day for the first time in five tests.
