Black Caps set to host South Africa in pink ball test

The first pink ball test in New Zealand looks set to take place during the South African tour next summer.

New Zealand Cricket CEO David White has told Newstalk ZB's Tony Veitch that if a pink-ball trial round in the Plunket Shield goes to plan, it's likely the Black Caps will play their first home day-night test during the 2017 season.

"I think it's a distinct possibility and something we've discussed. Obviously South Africa would have to be keen as well but I think that it's very much a possibility."

"I think if we're going to do it, the first one should be a very big game. Provided we get the conditions right and make it a huge big extravaganza," White said.

White said the test would likely to take place after Christmas and with South Africa scheduled to tour in February it makes even more sense to have the first pink-ball test against the world number one ranked test side.

"The big difference between New Zealand and Australia is that it will be a big challenge to do it before Christmas because of our weather. But I think post-Christmas when it's a lot warmer at night I think will be more attractive," he said.

Hamilton's Seddon Oval and Auckland's Eden Park are the most likely options to host the test.

The Black Caps and Australia competed in the first ever day-night test in Adelaide in November with Australia winning a thrilling encounter by three wickets.
