Cricket team bowled out for 3

The Wirral Cricket Club made just three runs after chasing 108 for victory.

A cricket team in Cheshire has been bowled all out for just three runs - and saw their day get even worse when they were mocked on Twitter by Piers Morgan.

Wirral Cricket Club's first team managed 10 ducks and only a single run off the bat - by their number 11 - with the other two runs coming from leg byes.

It isn't the lowest score ever recorded in a league match - that accolade goes to the Somerset club Langport, which was bowled out for zero in 1913.

But the Cheshire League Division Three fixture has received notoriety on social media after users started sharing images of Wirral's spectacularly bare scorecard yesterday.

The club itself took the result in good spirits, tweeting: "1st XI lost by 105 runs today... Sadly the opposition only scored 108!"

Other clubs in the league were quick to question the result once it went up online, asking Wirral's opposition Haslington if there was "an error in [their] scoring system".

But after Wirral confirmed that it was indeed real, the misery of their day was compounded when Mr Morgan, who has more than four million followers, tweeted a picture of the scorecard and sarcastically said: "Well batted @Wirral_CC".

Discussing the collapse on BBC Radio 5 live, Matt Garrett, who came in at number nine with the score at 0-7, said: "It all happened in a bit of a blur really.

"I think I headed into the changing rooms to get my pads on when we were three down and got out to the middle just in time to take my guard when the seventh wicket fell.

"The reaction in the back of your mind is, 'I think we can still do this' but, two balls later when you're following all your team-mates back to the clubhouse, you think perhaps it's not your day."

Wirral later tweeted at a host of cricket's most famous names asking for coaching tips, and boasted that they at least have the "best teas and showers in the league".
