Led by an unbeaten 162-run fifth wicket partnership between Tim McIntosh and Doug Winger, Parnell thumped Takapuna by 123 runs yesterday to take the early lead in the premier one-day cricket championship.
Batting first after winning the toss in their Cricket Express Cup third round game transferred to Orakei Domain,
Parnell posted 229/4.
Takapuna were always struggling and survived just 38.2 overs in reaching 106.
Papatoetoe made hard work of their win over Grafton.
Led by a half-century from Darren Crook, Grafton reached a reasonable 220/9 despite a good five-wicket bag from Vijay Soma. Papatoetoe openers Muzza Khawaja and Shane Singe piled on 167 runs for the first wicket.
Khawaja had a good weekend. He backed up his 51 on Saturday with 104 from 103 balls yesterday. But once that opening stand was broken, the innings fell apart. Papatoetoe slumped to 200/3 and 204/6, with three (of their only 49) overs to bat. They eventually got home with one over and two wickets in hand.
East Coast Bays batted their full 50 overs at Freyberg Park to reach 219 in the face of some good medium-pace bowling from Paul Hitchcock and a slow outfield. It was soon obvious it was not enough as North Shore openers Gene Andrews and Richard Jones laid the foundation with a good opening partnership.
Andrews scored 53 to keep the visitors on top. With Hitchcock and Hayden Smith chipping in with 46 each, North Shore got home with plenty of overs and wickets in hand.
In reaching 190 in 49 overs, Howick Pakuranga were rated only a 50-50 chance against Cornwall. However, Cornwall never hit their straps and were sent packing for 122 in 33.4 overs with only Chris Knight (40) offering much as Nathan Strom led the Howick Pakuranga attack with three for 28.
The first grade Rosebowl was notable for some low-scoring and good bowling.
University medium-pacer Tim Dineen collected an amazing six for nine from seven overs as Parnell were humiliated in being dismissed for a paltry 46 chasing 98 scored by University.
Cornwall's Todd Hewitt and Jason Martin bagged seven wickets between then as Eden Roskill eked out a miserable 86 runs at Keith Hay Park. Cornwall made hard work of it in reply but did reach 87/5 to claim the points.
Waitakere City mustered just 102 as Mike Ewart bagged five wickets and nine for the weekend for Birkenhead City. Birkenhead reached 103/7 (in 44.4 overs) to get home despite Chetan Patel's best effort in taking five for 14.
Suburbs New Lynn ensured they would share the first grade lead with University with their comfortable 72-run win over Ellerslie.
Dean Bartlett snared eight for 32 with the ball but it counted for nothing as Ellerslie's batting was not up to it.
