Cricket: NZ under-19s heavily beaten in playoff for third

New Zealand were convincingly beaten by South Africa in the playoff for third and fourth at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia today.

New Zealand were unable to recover from the loss of early wickets and posted just 90 runs in their innings. South Africa completed the chase at Endeavour Park in Townsville in the 15th over with eight wickets in hand.

Opener Quinton de Kock (50) got South Africa's chase off to a quick start, putting on 48 for the first wicket with captain Chad Bowes (12), and South Africa cruised to the target in only 14.4 overs for the loss of two wickets.

New Zealand had earlier won the toss and opted to bat but struggled against the South African bowling attack. They lost two wickets in the second over and never recovered, losing wickets at regular intervals.

Opener Joe Carter (20) and Connor Neynens (21 not out) put up some resistance, but were unable forge influential partnerships. New Zealand were all out for 90 in 36.4 overs.

David Rhoda was the chief wicket-taker for South Africa, finishing with four for 26 from 9.5 overs.

The result sees South Africa finish third overall, with New Zealand fourth. Australia and India meet in tomorrow's final.
