However a rousing opening stand of 178 between Unmukt Chand and RobinUthappa in 30 overs put the Indians on course for a comfortable win.
They reached 261 for four in 44.1 overs, with limited-overs international Uthappa hitting 103, with eight fours and five sixes, and captain Chand scoring a rapid 94 off 88 balls, with nine fours and six sixes.
The most successful of the New Zealand bowlers was fast-medium Adam Milne, who took three for 43.
