Leading New Zealand player Kane Williamson has a fracture in his left thumb and is returning home early from the tour to Bangladesh.

Williamson suffered the injury fielding in the Bangladesh innings of the 43-run Duckworth Lewis defeat to their hosts in the first ODI in Dhaka last night.

Williamson was to have captained New Zealand on their ODI trip to Sri Lanka which follows straight after the Bangladesh tour.

New Zealand had two ODIs and a T20 international in Bangladesh before heading to Sri Lanka.
