Former Otago and New Zealand offspinner Paul Wiseman will play for Canterbury this season.
Despite Canterbury's proud record, Wiseman said he has not moved there in a bid to kick-start his international career.
Wiseman has missed the test squad to tour Australia, but is on standby.
He has played 14 tests and
14 one-day internationals since his debut in 1997, but has struggled to cement a permanent position in either lineup.
"I don't think playing for Canterbury is going to help my international chances in any way," Wiseman said.
"That was definitely not the reason for my shift. I think you should have the same chance of playing for New Zealand, wherever you are."
He was not surprised to miss the latest test squad.
"Glen Sulzberger was picked to play in the cancelled tour of Pakistan, so it would have been unfair if they did not pick him again."
Joining Canterbury was a lifestyle decision, he said.
"I have been living in Christchurch since April last year, so my decision to play up here suits my circumstances. If I played for Otago again it would mean living down there for five to six months.
"That would have been pretty tough on my partner, who is up here, especially if I was to get back in the Black Caps and go on tour with them.
"She would hardly see me, which would make it tough to keep the relationship and maintain a balance in life."
Wiseman will play his club cricket in Christchurch for High School Old Boys, coached by former international Geoff Allott.
