It needed an extra hole but in the end Westlake BHS completed a deserved three-peat in claiming the Auckland/North Harbour premier golf title from Auckland Grammar at Pupuke on Monday.

With the overall scores tied after the three best cards (of four) had been tallied, the respective lowest handicapped players in each team returned to the 18th for a sudden-death playoff, which Westlake's No 1 Jared Bellas won with par to George Helsby's bogey five.

It was redemption for Bellas as he had fired a four-over 74 as the non-counting score in regulation play. Bellas had a mixed round, firing an eagle, two birdies and three double bogeys.

Like Harry Yang, who had an even par round, Bellas is a Pupuke member. Ironically, the match was sent to the playoff when Yang, who had the chance to clinch it for WBHS, had a three-putt double bogey on the last.

It was a highly entertaining battle throughout and played in good spirit.

On the short par four 16th, as an example, all four players in one group - two from each school - all recorded birdies with putts ranging from 30 to 4 feet (9 to 1.2m).

It was a third straight success for Bellas and Yang who had been members of the team who beat Massey High in an all-North Harbour final at Remuera last year and AGS at Peninsula in 2011.

Only Sam Reese, who shot a one over 71, will be back next year whereas all members of the AGS team will be available. Reese is the son of Stuart Reese, a former New Zealand professional and now club pro at Peninsula.

Individual scores, WBHS, Yang (handicap 1.3) 70, Bellas (1.0) 74, Reese (1.9) 71, Changi Lee (2.0) 69. AGS, Helsby (0.5) 73, Jordan Loof (1.1) 77, Mitchell McLean (1.9) 66, Ryan Steven (2.8) 71.

In the semifinals, played over 18 holes in the first term (the earlier rounds are played over nine holes), WBHS beat St Kentigern and AHS beat Wentworth College.

The feature first round game in the championship pitted front-runners and defending champions St Pauls against MAGS in shocking conditions at St Pauls.

Despite the heavy rain, both teams played their part in an entertaining, hard-fought contest in which the home side came from behind to win 18-6 - four tries to one.

St Pauls scored first when player of the day, stand-off Jamon Peua found space on the edge to pick out hooker Semisi Havili who skipped away on a 20m run to score. MAGS replied quickly when prop Timothy Smith barged over close to the posts. Sam Lulia's goal gave the visitors their 6-4 lead.

Second row forward Bunty Afoa s scored next for St Pauls and Peua scored on halftime to give the hosts a 12-6 lead. He added a second after the break which he converted.

In other pool B games, Tangaroa edged Aorere 6-0 while MRGS and Papatoetoe played out a 10-10 draw.

De La Salle College began impressively downing Kelston BHS11-8 in a tough away game in the 1A competition.

Trailing 11-5 at halftime, De La Salle defended superbly and kept the home team scoreless in the second half.

The match started brightly for Kelston, taking the early lead through the boot of fullback Roland Alaiasa.

The home side had a great chance to extend their lead after a poor clearing kick from fullback O.J. Te'o gave them a lineout just outside of the 22.

The Kelston pack rumbled the ball up almost to the line with De La Salle repelling the tank-like maul the Kelston threw at them.

The De La Salle line would eventually crack, however, when a penalty gave Kelston ball inside the De La Salle 22. Peter Scanlan finished off an attack dotting down in the corner to open up an 8-0 lead.

This try seemed to spark De La Salle into life.

A perfectly placed cross field kick from first five-eighths Kitione Toia found the hands of wing Herbert Sione, who was bundled into touch just a few metres short of the line.

De La Salle attacked the scrappy Kelston ruck and won the turnover, and quick ball allowed De La Salle to spread wide to Tomasi Aoake who crossed the line out wide. giving Kelston a 8-5 lead heading into halftime.

Kelston's ill discipline in the second half, allowed De La Salle to kick two penalties to take an 11-8 lead.

Kelston later had the chance to pull it level with a penalty in front of the posts, but the kick from Nathaniel Apa was miss hit and went spraying wide.

Papatoetoe High was on the wrong end of a 97-3 thrashing by MAGS who ran in 17 tries. AGS too found early season form beating Onehunga 57-3 while Kings, 35-8 winners over St Peters, and Sacred Heart, who beat Tangaroa 34-10 also picked up bonus point wins. - Oliver Pownall

The AGS 1st XV continued on their winning way yesterday with a 34-24 win over New Plymouth BHS in their annual fixture for the Faull Cup. In winning, AGS also retained the Moascar Cup.

The win capped a great day for AGS as they also beat NP BHS 22-12 in under-15 rugby, 4-1 in soccer, 4-0 in hockey, 87-74 in basketball with the AGS cross-country team also winners.

North Harbour

Home advantage was not enough to get Massey High across the line in the opening round of the 1A championship. Pitted against WBHS in the match of the opening round, Massey led at halftime but could not sustain the pressure eventually going down 20-17.

In the surprise of the round, Takapuna Grammar treated their home supporters to an early thrill when they held neighbours Rosmini to a 17-all draw.

In the feature game, Massey and Westlake tested each other early but with mistakes, turnovers and penalties at the breakdown aplenty there was no score until late in the first half.

Westlake turned down a couple of early scoring opportunities from penalties with Massey eventually going ahead with a penalty goal from first five-eighth Tyler Castle, to which the visitors replied in a like manner through halfback Harry Calverley.

The hosts pushed into Westlake's half late in the first half and from a scrum worked a well-drilled move with a short ball delivered to charging winger Mark Telea who went through the defensive line, stepping the last defender to score. Castle added the extra for a 10-3 halftime lead.

Westlake came out firing after the break and from a scrum penalty they took a quick tap and worked the ball wide to centre Willy Lea'ae Toa who breached the defence to score out wide. Calverley kicked the conversion for 10-10.

Hard-working Westlake openside flanker Brendan Bond broke away to score next to the posts. Calverley's conversion gave the visitors a 17-10 lead.

Both sides battled away but their defences held until late in the second half before Massey's big reserve lock Faamanu Petelo drove hard for the line and reached out to touch down under the posts. Castle kicked the conversion to tie it up 17-17.

A late Massey infringement handed Calverley the chance to for WBHS to win. He landed a well-taken penalty for the 20-17 victory.

In other games, promoted Orewa started well edging Rangitoto 14-8 and last season's 1B champion Birkenhead showed their intentions with a comprehensive 44-8 win over Mahurangi at Warkworth.

MAGS needed just eight minutes to score their first goal of the new season when Josh Harris watched in delight as his early shot took a deflection which beat unhappy Kelston goalkeeper Damien Hirst. Harris added a second three minutes later. Scott Doney stretched the lead to 3-0 just before halftime.

The visitors got one back early in the second spell when Luke Van Khan swept the ball past MAGS custodian Cameron Hogg. KBHS continued to attack and forced a succession of corners with Hogg called on to make a spectacular save to deny the visitors a second goal.

With ill-discipline leading to four bookings and with an injury to Jake Porter, MAGS lost some of their composure but refocused and had late goals to Monty Patterson and Doney to complete the victory.

In the upset of the round, defending champions Sacred Heart, with coach Danny Hay and three of their players just back from their British tour, went down 6-0 at home to St Kentigern.

AGS kicked-off their season with a 3-0 home win over St Peters. The other game, between WBHS and Rangitoto was postponed as WBHS played, and won, their Chatham Cup fixture.

On Saturday St Kentigern will host MAGS as part of the annual Jubilee Cup exchange between the two schools. That match - at noon - will be preceded by the girls' soccer clash at 10am and the premier netball encounter at 11am. The four-sport bonanza will culminate in the 1st 15 rugby clash at 2.30pm.

St Kentigern hold the Jubilee Cup which was presented last year as part of MAGS 90th jubilee.
