Tina and Ofa Hakeai's remarkable sequence has seen the NZ schools senior discus title stay in the family for five straight years.

Tina and Ofa Hakeai's remarkable sequence has seen the NZ schools senior discus title stay in the family for five straight years.

Oceania Games and Glasgow on agenda for pair who credit Auckland Girls' Grammar for their success.

The Hakeais are a couple of hard-case sisters. But don't mistake those big smiles for soft attitudes.

No school shot put or discus record was safe when Sositina (Tina) Hakeai was at Auckland Girls' Grammar School, and now her little sister Ofa is busy rewriting those record books.

Ofa is just 16 but already has risen to the No 3 women's shot put ranking, behind Valerie Adams and former Mt Albert Grammar's Te Rina Keenan. The year 12 Auckland Girls' Grammar student is also the senior NZ schools discus champion, though not, strangely, the shot put equivalent.

Now her short-term focus lies with the New Zealand team heading to the Oceania Games in Sydney on March 11, where she will fire the shot in the Under 18 category. While she clearly loves shot put and is inspired by the likes of world champion Adams, she still performs well in discus competitions. She and coach Nigel Edwards are working on her speed and rotation in the circle, priceless commodities in this dynamic power sport.

"I enjoy shot put. In discus, you need speed. I'm not fast, I'm slow, but I've got a lot of power," says Ofa, whose personal best in the shot is 13.01m. Adams' PB is 21.24m, which is an indication of how good she is and how big the gap is between her and the rest. But Ofa is almost as dominant at schools and Under 18 levels.

Ofa is the more academic one, but Tina has that competitive drive and feisty spirit.

"We're opposites. I was the popular one at school. She was the nerd!" jokes Tina.

"I was three years ahead of her at school, but she's been breaking my junior records. I hope she doesn't break all my records but it's okay because we have the same last name."

Tina fondly recalls her time at Auckland Girls', from where she was four-time NZ schools discus champ and two-time shot put champ. In 2012, and still finishing school, Tina was the New Zealand women's senior shot put and discus champ (Adams did not compete).

"My school helped me so much. If it wasn't for the Not for Me scholarship I wouldn't be breaking records and going to nationals. When Ofa came in, it was much easier because I already had funding from school," says Tina, who qualified this month for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in discus with a personal best throw of 59.65m.

Shot put is on the backburner for Tina as she pours her focus into the discus. She reckons Adams is too good, but there is a prime opportunity to follow in the footsteps of 1997 world champion Beatrice Faumuina. She has already broken several of her school records.

The sisters both live at the family home in Mangere, and with Tina training on the North Shore with former winter Olympian and Highlanders conditioning coach Matt Dallow, and Ofa training in the school gym and at Mt Smart or over the back fence in Mangere, Tina racks up plenty of mileage in her car.

There are senior athletics nationals next month for both the girls, but Ofa does not get the opportunity until the end of the year to continue a remarkable sequence which has seen the NZ schools senior discus title stay in the Hakeai family for five straight years. With two years left at Auckland Girls' Grammar, Ofa has the chance to keep this event in the family for an extraordinary seven years. Who would bet against this powerful young woman?
