KEY POINTS:

Led by the amazing Atawhai Tupaea, Papakura High stretched their winning run in the senior girls national touch championship to five years.

Their 5-3 win over Wainuiomata College - newcomers at this level - caps a grand run by Papakura.

Tupaea has shared the spoils of victory in all of their successes.

Asked to single out an outstanding player, the school's sports co-ordinator, Carlin Crossan, said it had been a genuine team effort by all 13 girls in the squad.

"We have to make special mention of Atawhai, but all the players contributed," said Crossan.

Papakura do not call on a big pool of players, just 34, but capped their day at North Harbour Stadium by adding the mixed title as well.

Led by Jono Ale, later named the most valuable boy in the mixed competition, Papakura beat a tenacious Otaki College 6-5.

"It was the first time we have won the mixed title," said Crossan. "Jono will be back next year so we are hoping to keep our winning teams together."

The boys' final, played at furious pace, was won 7-6 by Aranui High over New Plymouth Boys High.

Sam Robinson (Aranui HS) took the boys' MVP award and Anien Bester (Rangitoto) was judged most valuable girl. Shay Piddick (Otaki College) was the girls' MVP in the mixed grade.

Athletics

Rangitoto College capped their good sporting year with four gold medals at the New Balance-sponsored national secondary school championships at QEII Stadium.

The North Shore school was joined by Wanganui Collegiate as winners of four individual titles at the championships - the most won by any school at the two-day event.

Sinisa Zagorac led Rangitoto's charge in retaining his pole vault title with a 4.30m clearance, tantalisingly close to Paul Gibbon's 15-year-old record.

Sophie Healey scorched the 400m in 57.45s to win the junior title in a time faster than recorded by the winner of the senior championship. In winning the junior girls javelin, Rangitoto's Pippa Charlesworth went one better than the silver she collected a year ago.

Werner Geldenhuys completed Rangitoto's golden haul in the junior boys 100m hurdles.

Rosmini's James Doyle had a busy championship winning three titles, including the shot put and discus. He showed his versatility by adding the high jump.

Ayla Gill (Takapuna Grammar) threw to gold in taking the junior hammer-shot double.

Chelsea Johannsen (WGHS) also flew the flag for North Shore schools in winning the junior 200m.

Swingball

It might have looked like a lot of fun for pupils from 23 Auckland secondary schools, but the ASB Swingball Classic was a hard-fought, exercise.

The Sparc-endorsed event held at the home of Auckland tennis and played under the Sultans of Swing banner, was aimed at finding the best Year 9 and 10 champions.

What the organisers had not bargained on was the ferocity of some competitors, which resulted in 11 swingball sets being written off.

Cory Buchanan (Alfriston College) beat Aric Naidoo (Sancta Maria College) 3-1 to win the Year 9 title in the best-of-five final.

The Year 10 final was a hard-hitting affair with Lukas Sousa (Onehunga HS) blasting his way to a 3-2 victory over Dylan Whittiker-Rewi (Lynfield College).

The winners received individual prize packs along with $3000 worth of sporting equipment for their schools, while the runners-up earned $1500 of sporting goods for their schools.
