First XI need only one point from last two matches for 11th premier title in 17 years.

A below-strength MAGS XI took a giant step towards another premier league title with a 2-0 win over St Peters on their artificial turf.

Missing Liam Jordan, Ben Mata and NZ "A" team player Monty Patterson, coach Kevin Fallon brought in Olusegun Rotimi, Ben Robinson and Jake Porter in a reshuffled midfield. St Peters were minus key striker David Brown who was out injured.

The first goal was not long in coming. In the 7th minute right fullback Joe Nottage got forward wide and crossed to Scott Doney at the far post. The giant striker towered above the home defenders to head past Sam Cameron in the home goal.

After 16 minutes there was a repeat performance out on the right touch line with Nottage crossing to Doney at the far post. The big striker again nodded home but referee Charlie Tseng blew for offside. Two minutes later the same pair combined again but Cameron gathered the resultant header from Doney.

Jake Porter settled a lot of nerves in the 22nd minute when he picked up a poor clearance, advanced to the edge of the St Peter's penalty area and unleashed a dipping, swerving shot that had goal written all over it and gave MAGS their 2-0 lead.

The second half was soon a mirror image of what had been produced in the first 45 minutes. The visitors continued to create chances but could not add a third goal whereas the hosts had their opportunities but could not close the gap.

MAGS need only a point from their remaining two games, including Saturday's home clash with AGS - the only team to have beaten them this season - to make certain of an 11th title in 17 years.

St Peter's coach Brett McMurdoch said afterwards: "As long as we kept the score down we were in the game. For our boys a 2-0 defeat was a job well done."

Cashing in on St Kentigern's stumble at Westlake BHS - beaten 3-2 for just their second loss of the season - AGS, 6-0 home winners over Rangitoto, moved into second place. Sacred Heart also lost ground when held 1-1 at Kelston BHS.
