The ball dominated the bat on the opening day of senior boys' cricket on Saturday.

In the one-day matches, Westlake BHS hit the ground running, dismissing St Kentigern for 131. They then lost an early wicket but, led by Elliot Power's unbeaten 57, won by nine wickets in just 28 overs.

Rangitoto College managed just 112 but that got them home over Mt Albert Grammar School, who were skittled for 64.

Macleans, sent in by King's, struggled after losing an early wicket and were dismissed for 114 in the 43rd over.

King's also lost early wickets before Angus McLean, Andrew de Boorder and Jonathon Bassett-Graham hit the runs they needed with 23 overs to spare.

Kelston BHS reached a modest 147 but that proved beyond Takapuna Grammar, who were bundled out for 77.

Sacred Heart managed 222 for 8 but the top-order Auckland Grammar batsmen made 227 for 3.

Cricket will resume on October 28 after a break this week.

TENNIS

St Kentigern go into the finals of the Auckland secondary school championships on Saturday week chasing what would be an amazing treble.

All three of their boys' teams won comfortable victories in last weekend's semifinals.

In the key senior A1 clash they beat King's 7-2 and will now play Westlake BHS in the final after Westlake edged Auckland Grammar 5-4 in a hard-fought contest.

In the intermediate semifinals, St Kentigern swamped Auckland Grammar 8-1 while King's beat Westlake Boys 5-4.

St Kentigern dropped three of their nine matches in the junior semifinal against Westlake but still made the final, where they will again meet King's, who overpowered Auckland Grammar 7-2.

Their senior girls lost the semifinal to Rangitoto 5-4 and their juniors were outclassed 8-1 by Baradene, who will play Diocesan, 9-0 winners over St Cuthbert's.

* With a break for Labour Weekend, College Sport will return on November 1.
