Auckland champions Mt Albert Grammar lead the way as sport's status grows.

The number of sports under the College Sport umbrella continues to grow with girl's lacrosse the latest to be awarded ASB Young Sportsperson of the Year status.

Girls are showing the way locally and nationally with a one-day girl's tournament at the Avondale racecourse on Friday followed by the national secondary schools championships in Cambridge (again girls only) on August 24-25. In the past it has been a one-day event.

The MAGS girls will go into both tournaments as the team to beat after their 7-3 away win over Diocesan in the Auckland final. MAGS also won last year's one-day tournament and will be joined at the NZSS Championships by Diocesan, EGGS and Whangaparaoa as Auckland representatives.

The local final was a hard-fought affair with the hosts dominating early and taking a 2-0 lead. By halftime MAGS were back in it at 2-2. The visitors took control in the second half and pulled ahead to win by four goals and retain their title.

Goalscorers for MAGS were Amelia Scharting (3), Katie Budgen, Luisa Roberts, Lauren Curd and Briar Tippett.

The MAGS players welcomed back NZBLAX team members, captain and head girl Scharting and Tippett after their recent trip to the World Championships in Oshawa, Canada. The team is co-coached by recent past students Vlad Boikov and Olivia Hext.

Locally, the season is split into two distinct halves with the girls' and boys' competitions played separately. The boys have some ground to make up before they enjoy equal status with the girls.

Lacrosse is a blossoming sport in New Zealand and would grow even quicker but for the problems and costs of importing gear.

The safety equipment required for boys' lacrosse includes helmet, gloves, more goalkeeping protective gear and sturdy sticks. Teams are also required to provide at least one goal for each game.

This year there is only the one boy's grade in Auckland which does not allow schools who are new to the sport and/or schools who want to provide a development programme. At MAGS the sport has grown in girls' lacrosse from one team (2009), to two teams (2010-2012) and now four teams.

Fifteen teams from 12 schools will play in Friday's tournament.
