De La Salle College know what has to be done.

They must beat Mt Albert Grammar to secure a semifinal spot in Auckland's 1A competition.

Heading into the final weekend of the round robin competition De La Salle are fifth on the table with 29 points. Ahead of them are Auckland Grammar (41), Kings College (36), Mt Albert Grammar (31) and Kelston Boys (30).

On form Auckland Grammar should beat Tamaki College in their final match, Kings should beat St Kentigern and Kelston should have no problem against bottom-of-the-table Otahuhu - however the De La Salle and Mt Albert match is a little more difficult to predict.

Both sides go into the match on the back of wins. De La Salle picked up an 18-7 win over Tangaroa College last weekend and Mt Albert beat Sacred Heart 23-18.

It was De La Salle's fourth win in a row.

They dominated territory scoring three tries to Tangaroa's one while their powerful defence limited Tangaroa's attacking options.

In other matches last weekend Kings beat Tamaki 16-10, Auckland Grammar edged out St Peters 16-13, Kelston beat St Kentigern 18-7 and St Pauls beat Otahuhu 18-11.

In the girls' competition Northcote maintained their lead at the top of the table with a comfortable 47-14 win over Long Bay College.

Westlake Girls High beat Rangitoto 27-0 and remain second in the competition behind Northcote.

Curling

Birkenhead College's Team Seo, Team Niu and Team Edwards all picked up wins in the ninth round of the Auckland competition.

Team Seo defeated the Massey High Strikers 12-1, Team Niu beat the Massey High Frosties 7-4 and Team Edwards defeated Papakura Boys High 4-3.

The Massey High Shooters also secured a win beating Westlake Girls Stillwell 8-0.

Cycling

Heavy air meant the records stayed intact during race five of the Waterfront time trials in Auckland.

The most exciting race of the day was the junior boys' competition where Macleans College finished two seconds clear of Auckland Grammar and Westlake, who both posted times of 22 minutes 52s.

The race was so close that 14 teams finished within a three-minute window.

In the senior boys event St Kentigern finished six seconds ahead of Auckland Grammar A with Westlake A third. St Kentigern were just 17 seconds off the course record with their 20m 59s finish.

In the girls' competition Diocesan A won the senior and junior events.

The Diocesan seniors finished 57s ahead of St Cuthberts A in 24m 10s and the juniors finished in 25m 05s beating Westlake Girls by a comfortable 1m 05. The next race is on August 13.

Hockey

Kings College meet Westlake and Auckland Grammar face Massey tonight in the semifinals of the Auckland Intercity boys' competition.

Auckland Grammar go into their match on the back on a hard fought 2-0 win over Westlake Boys in their final round robin match.

The match between the two unbeaten pool A sides was always going to be a big one but Auckland Grammar had it sewn up in the first 10 minutes punishing Westlake for basic errors which saw them concede a soft field goal and a penalty corner.

Down 2-0 at half time Westlake dominated possession in the second half but could not convert.

In the semifinals of the girls' competition tomorrow night Westlake Girls face Rangitoto and Diocesan will meet St Cuthberts.

Soccer

Diocesan square off against Glendowie College in the senior girls' final tonight at Mt Albert's Phyllis St Reserve.

Diocesan beat Mt Albert 1-0 in their semifinal match and Glendowie upset last year's winners Epsom Girls Grammar 5-4 in a shoot out.

In the junior girls' competition Long Bay College made the final for the first time beating last year's winners Epsom Girls Grammar 3-1. They will meet Orewa who beat Westlake 4-1 in the other semi.
