The punch that put boxing world on notice

There's making a statement in the boxing ring and then there's the stunning knockout shot provided by Jermall Charlo at the weekend.

Charlo retained his IBF junior middleweight world title with a brutal knockout of Julian 'J Rock' Williams in Los Angeles on Sunday. The clash with Williams was meant to be Charlo's biggest test, but it was one he passed with flying colours.

The IBF super welterweight champion put on a clinic at the USC Galen Centre, knocking Williams down three times, to keep a hold of his world crown.

But it was the fight's conclusion that has put the boxing world on notice. Charlo unleashed a stunning right hand uppercut to put a definitive end to the contest midway through the fifth round.

Boxing analyst and former world champion, Paulie Malignaggi was part of the commentary team for the fight and he detailed his amazement at the skill shown by Charlo.

"It's amazing. He blocks a punch with the same hand that he throws the uppercut," Malignaggi explained. " I thought he took the right hand first, but he didn't take the punch at all.

"He actually blocks the punch, with the same hand as he's rolling, holds his ground and then fires back with that. Amazing."

Charlo's win was his 19th stoppage in just 25 fights, keeping him unbeaten as a professional, as Williams endured his first career defeat.

Charlo is using the weekend's coming out party as his springboard into the elite level of the sport and he wasted little time in eyeing up some of the biggest names in Boxing.

"I want to unify the WBO with Canelo, the WBC and the WBA. Where are you Canelo? Charlo said. "I want to prove I'm the best junior middleweight in the world".

"None of them are on my level. I've worked very hard throughout my career. I haven't been given anything".

Amazingly Jermall has an identical twin brother, named Jermell, who not only fights in the same weight division, but holds the WBC world title.

Jermall is the older brother, beating his twin by a minute, however his younger brother has the edge in the boxing ring, with a 28-0 record, compared to the IBF champion's 25-0.
