NZ’s top Google searches: Joseph Parker tops list of most-searched Kiwis in 2025

Heavyweight boxer Joseph Parker was the most searched New Zealander on Google by his fellow Kiwis this year, topping a list heavy with sporting talent.

The global search giant announced its top-trending searches in New Zealand for 2025 this morning, with six sportspeople among the top 10 Kiwis searched.

Parker has had a big year. In February, he was booked to fight Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight title. Dubois pulled out, and Parker went on to defend his WBO interim heavyweight title with an early stoppage win over Martin Bakole.

The year took a turn for the 33-year-old in October, however, as he lost the interim title in a controversial loss to Englishman Fabio Wardley. Wardley has since been upgraded to full WBO world champion after Oleksander Usyk vacated the title.

It was later revealed that Parker returned an adverse finding from an anti-doping test conducted on the day of the bout. He said the result was a surprise, and he was co-operating with the necessary organisations to clear his name.

“I did not take any prohibited substance. I do not use performance-enhancing drugs and do not support their use,” he said in a statement last month.

There has been no further update on the matter.

Parker led New Zealand’s Google list from former Green MP Benjamin Doyle and Grammy award-winning musician Lorde.

They were followed by Formula One driver Liam Lawson, golfer Daniel Hillier, mixed martial artist Kai Kara-France and cruiserweight boxer David Nyika.

English Premier League footballer Chris Wood also featured, rounding out the top 10 with politicians Brooke van Velden and Stuart Nash.

American conservative activist Charlie Kirk topped New Zealand’s overall searches after his death in September.

As highlighted by the list of top Kiwis, sport was again in high demand from New Zealand’s Google users. All Blacks v France featured on the top-10 overall list, while SailGP Auckland featured among the top 10 local moments.
