Boxing: Aussies eyeing up SBW

Paul Gallen wants a crack at him and now Danny Green is keen to take on Sonny Bill Williams in the ring.

Green, the Australian who has held world titles in the super middlweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions, approached Williams' manager Khoder Nasser about the possibility of a fight in 2016.

"A lot of people have been saying it to me and I said to Khoder I'd do it, no problem," Green told the Daily Telegraph. "He said that's not the stupidest thing I've heard. So we spoke about it. That, to me, is really exciting. It's a big fight.

"It's new, it's fresh, and Sonny Bill, man, look at the bloke. He's a giant, he's an exceptional athlete, I've got a lot of respect for the bloke."

Green would need to fight at heavyweight, allowing Williams to fight at a comfortable 106-107kg. Green would be closer to 87kg.

It's a sizeable weight difference but Green is a considerably more experienced boxer.
"It's a bit David versus Goliath," said Green, who had been in talks about a rematch with Anthony Mundine.

"People will say it's a football star coming across to the sport of boxing against a legitimate fighter. But the legitimate fighter has got the experience and he has got the size.

"He's got the strength, the athleticism, the youth, the power. And I'll be 43 and he'll be in his prime."

One of the biggest obstacles, outside of agreeing terms, would be around fitting it into Williams' schedule. The 30-year-old is keen to play sevens next year in the hope of playing at next year's Rio Olympics and also has commitments with the Chiefs and probably the All Blacks.

The last of his seven professional fights was in February when he claimed a unanimous points decision over American journeyman Chauncy Welliver.
