Bowls: Wilson wins youth title

New Zealand bowls trialist Doug Wilson beat another Christchurch bowler Isaac Denny to win the youth singles tournament title yesterday.

The mixed event, an unofficial national under-25 tournament, attracted 32 entries.

Wilson beat Denny 9-4 8-4 in the final to claim the $1500 first prize.

Wilson was unbeaten in his run to the final after surviving a tough semifinal against Wellington's Clare McCaul.

McCaul, 18, forced Wilson to a tiebreaker before Wilson prevailed 12-3 7-8 2-0.

Denny had had a close semifinal, winning 6-7 9-8 2-1 against Brook Tippett, of Auckland.
