One of the biggest one-day tournaments in Auckland for many years will be held on Friday at the Remuera club in aid of the St Joseph's Mercy Hospice.
Auckland sports and bowls personality Jack Carter has arranged the tournament as a gesture to the hospice's 200 volunteers, among whom is
his daughter, Julie Read.
Sixty-four teams and 256 players will compete in fours on the Remuera club's four greens. Carter said there would be prizes totalling $2500 and the aim was to raise $20,000 for the hospice. That would be achieved through auctions, including the first set of Australian-manufactured coloured bowls to go on sale in New Zealand.
Carter said that while the tournament would have a competitive element, there would also be an emphasis on fun, with novice and social bowlers intermingled with champions.
Among the top bowlers will be past and present internationals Marlene Castle, Bob McDonald, Ivan Kostanich, Pat Robertson and Danny O'Connor.
Personalities from other sports include double internationals Mark Burgess and Phil Horne, and former All Blacks Pat Walsh, Waka Nathan, Fred Allen, Snow White, Barry Thomas, Graham Delamore, Percy Tetzlaff, Adrian Clarke and Keith Nelson. Keynote speaker will be Sir Murray Halberg.
