Nelson's Shannon McIlroy eclipsed Malcolm De Sousa from Jersey in a brilliant demonstration of draw play in testing conditions at the Lockleys Bowls Club in Adelaide yesterday afternoon to win his singles quarter-final at the world championships.
The 25-year-old Black Jack powered to a 21-3 victory, taking just 15 ends
to secure a semifinal showdown with Australia's Leif Selby on Sunday morning at 11.30am (NZT).
McIlroy and Selby last met in the Australian Open championship singles final in 2011, when an untimely gaffe by the popular New Zealander virtually handed Selby the $18,000 winner's cheque.
Redemption could figure in McIlroy's thinking somewhere, although the chance of making the final and winning gold will no doubt be his paramount motivation.
Today sees the women's triples combination of Mandy Boyd, Jan Khan and Lisa White playing Hong Kong in a quarter final at 11.30am (NZT), with the winner to play Scotland at 4.00pm.
