Wanganui bowler Karen Coombe outplayed persistent Elmwood rival Pam Phair to win 21-10 and claim the women's singles title at the national club championships in Rotorua yesterday.
Shaun Scott of Dunedin's North East Valley club held off a late surge from the previously unbeaten Richard Collett of Papakurato win 21-18 and lift the men's crown.
A former national representative Coombe roared into a commanding position in her final round-robin match, drawing superbly to open up a 20-5 lead.
Phair, also unbeaten through the first four rounds, lifted her game but on the 21st end Coombe finally held shot and took the title.
Coombe said she was aware that Phair was a fighter and capable of making a comeback from near impossible situations. Phair had come from 10-20 down to win her previous match 21-20.
The men's title was decided in similar fashion, with both Scott and Collett going into their final match unbeaten through four rounds.
Scott opened up a 20-8 lead before Collett began to make inroads into the lead and, at 20 -18, the result was in the balance.
"My father [Kevin] won a national singles title," Scott said, "I just wanted to keep the name going."
