Basketball: Abercrombie dunks his way through All Stars game

Thomas Abercrombie was hoping to find a spark during the ANBL All Stars game that might prove something of a catalyst for the rest of his season.

If ally-oops are the way to discover it, he's well on his way.

The Breakers swingman has been off-colour so far this season as he continues to struggle with a long-standing ankle injury but he showed little sign of that today as he helped the South to a 134-114 win over the North in Adelaide.

He chimed in with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals and showed why he was involved in the slam dunk competition earlier in the day as he often soared above the rim.

Defence doesn't play much of a role in all stars game. In fact, it's virtually non-existent as players are largely invited to attack the hoop and dunks and three-pointers were the most common method of scoring.

To illustrate the point, only four fouls were called throughout the game as the referees did little more than spectate and the South took a phenomenal 103 shots.

It's not the sort of game plan Breakers mentor Andrej Lemanis normally implements but he did little more than ring the changes as South coach as his charges played ad-lib basketball. It suited Breakers point guard Cedric Jackson, arguably the best player in the ANBL, who showed touches of brilliance to help South to a handy 69-51 halftime lead.

He was nearly left to rue his halftime prophecy when he said South would "definitely'' win. His side took their foot off the pedal as they searched for the spectacular and it allowed the North to work their way back into the match.

They closed the gap to 82-79 midway through the third quarter but the South soon knuckled down and won comfortably in the end.

Abercrombie, Jackson and Lemanis return to the serious business when the Breakers travel to take on Cairns on New Year's Eve.
