NEW YORK - Edgar Renteria hit a grand slam home run to pace a 27-hit attack as the Boston Red Sox mauled the New York Yankees 17-1 in American League baseball at Yankee Stadium yesterday.
Trot Nixon homered and drove in five runs for the Red Sox, who put up theirbiggest offensive display of the season to snap a four-game losing streak.
Johnny Damon had four hits and scored three runs for the Red Sox, while Manny Ramirez added four singles to the Boston offensive surge. The 27 hits were one away from the franchise record of 28 for a single game. Jay Payton also homered for the Red Sox, while Renteria and Nixon both wound up with three hits and Renteria also had five RBI.
John Olerud also had three hits for Boston.
Matt Clement (6-0) pitched six shutout innings for the win, allowing just five hits while striking out seven and walking four.
Three Boston relievers combined to finish up the eight-hitter.
Carl Pavano (4-3) allowed five runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one.
Bernie Williams had two hits and drove in a run for the Yankees, who were one hit away from allowing the most hits in franchise history.
The Red Sox scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-0 lead and had set their season high for hits by the fifth inning after scoring three runs or less in their previous three games for the first time since August, 2003.
