BALTIMORE (AP) Bud Norris pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Yankees 5-0 Friday night to become the first team since 2006 to sweep a doubleheader from New York.
In the first game of the day-night twinbill, Jimmy Paredes hit a two-run double with two outs in the 11th inning for a 2-1 victory.
Orioles slugger Chris Davis began a 25-game suspension without pay for a positive test for an amphetamine. The suspension will cover the final 17 games of the regular season and run into the playoffs, or perhaps into 2015.
Undeterred, Baltimore extended its winning streak to a season-high six games, moved a season-best 29 games over .500 (88-59) and increased its lead over second-place Toronto in the AL East to 11 1/2 games. The Orioles lowered their magic number for clinching the division to five.
New York is five games back for the second AL wild card and appears in danger of missing the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since 1992-93.
Norris (13-8) struck out 10 and walked two. He outpitched Bryan Mitchell (0-1), who allowed two runs over five innings in his first big league start.
In the opener, after Chris Young homered off Brad Brach (7-1) in the top of the 11th, Baltimore countered in the bottom half against Adam Warren (3-6).
GIANTS 9, DODGERS 0
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Madison Bumgarner struck out eight and took a share of the major league lead with 18 wins, and San Francisco moved within one game of NL West-leading Los Angeles.
Pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa splashed a three-run homer into McCovey Cove, and Brandon Crawford hit a two-run drive in the fifth to help Bumgarner win his fifth straight start. Buster Posey and Crawford hit RBI doubles in the first as the Giants jumped on Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-7).
The Dodgers' left-hander exited after only one inning because of irritation in his pitching shoulder.
San Francisco, which leads the NL wild-card race, is one game back of Los Angeles for the first time since Aug. 4. The Giants have won a season-best 10 straight home games.
Bumgarner (18-9) reached 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career.
TIGERS 7, INDIANS 2
DETROIT (AP) J.D. Martinez homered, tripled and drove in four runs for Detroit, and David Price pitched into the eighth inning.
Martinez broke a 1-all tie in the fourth with a two-run homer, and then drove in two more runs with his triple in the seventh. Price (14-11) allowed one run and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.
Ryan Raburn homered for Cleveland. Carlos Carrasco (7-5) allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings.
Tigers catcher Alex Avila helped out with the defensive play of the night. When Mike Aviles hit a foul popup behind the plate in the fifth, Avila made the catch while jumping into the screen, which provided a soft landing spot.
RED SOX 4, ROYALS 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Allen Webster pitched six solid innings and Jemile Weeks stroked a pair of doubles and scored two runs as Boston beat the sputtering Royals.
Kansas City lost for the fourth time in five games and fell out of first place in the AL Central for the first time since Aug. 10. The Royals, who are 0-5 against the last-place Red Sox, dropped a half-game behind Detroit.
Webster (4-3), hit hard in his previous three starts, limited the Royals to four hits including Eric Hosmer's two-run homer in the fourth.
Tommy Layne, Burke Badenhop, Koji Uehara and Edward Mujica held Kansas City hitless for the final three innings. Mujica earned his sixth save.
Yordano Ventura (12-10), who had won his past three starts, gave up four runs three earned and seven hits in seven innings.
MARINERS 4, ATHLETICS 2
SEATTLE (AP) Robinson Cano, Kendrys Morales and Logan Morrison homered, and Seattle beat Oakland to pull within a half-game of the Athletics for the top spot in the AL wild-card chase.
Oakland has seen nearly all of its wild-card lead disappear, going 3-12 over its last 15 games. Kansas City and Seattle are tied for the second wild card.
Cano hit his 13th homer in the first inning and Morrison connected in the fifth, both off Jason Hammel (10-11). Morales hit a line drive to right-center off Eric O'Flaherty in the sixth.
Mariners starter James Paxton (6-2) pitched six effective innings despite control trouble. Fernando Rodney earned his 45th save after giving up a pair of singles to open the ninth. Rodney tied Kazuhiro Sasaki's franchise record for saves in a season.
ANGELS 11, ASTROS 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) David Freese hit a two-run homer and Mike Trout had an RBI triple during Los Angeles' seven-run fifth inning, and the Angels beat Houston for their ninth consecutive victory.
Kole Calhoun had a tiebreaking, two-run single in the fifth for the major league-leading Angels (92-55), who began their final homestand by reducing their magic number to five for their first AL West title since 2009. They lead spiraling Oakland by 11 games with 15 to play.
Calhoun had three hits for the Angels, who erased an early 3-0 deficit with another barrage from the majors' most productive offense. Los Angeles has scored at least seven runs in eight consecutive games.
Brett Oberholtzer (5-11) couldn't get through the fifth for the Astros, who had won eight of 10.
Trout also had an RBI double and Howie Kendrick added a two-run double. The Angels have won 15 of 17 overall, highlighted by their longest winning streak since August 2004.
C.J. Wilson (12-9) struggled just to reach the fifth, but the Angels' offense secured his second straight victory.
CARDINALS 5, ROCKIES 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright won his 18th game to tie for the major league lead, Matt Holliday hit a long three-run homer in the first inning and St. Louis defeated Colorado to stop a three-game losing streak.
Wainwright (18-9) allowed one run and six hits in eight innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He retired his final 16 batters, improving to 7-1 against Colorado.
Holliday ended a nine-game RBI drought and homered for the first time this month, sending a 467-foot drive off Jorge De La Rosa (13-11) into Big Mac Land beyond left field. It was the second-longest homer at 9-year-old Busch Stadium behind Holliday's 469-foot shot off the Cubs' Ryan Dempster on July 20, 2012.
The NL Central-leading Cardinals stayed 2 games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh.
Colorado has scored three runs during a four-game skid.
PIRATES 7, CUBS 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) Gerrit Cole won consecutive starts for the first time since early June, NL batting leader Josh Harrison had three hits and the surging Pirates earned their seventh win in eight games.
Cole (9-5) improved to 5-0 against the Cubs, allowing three runs in six innings with six strikeouts. He also won at Wrigley Field last weekend.
Pittsburgh is 14-7 since Aug. 20, moving a season-high nine games over .500 at 78-69. The Pirates began the night with a 1 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.
Rookies Javier Baez and Arismendy Alcantara, homered for the Cubs, who have lost seven straight in their longest skid since 2012. Tsuyoshi Wada (4-3) gave up four runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings.
RAYS 1, BLUE JAYS 0
TORONTO (AP) Nathan Karns got his first major league win in his Tampa Bay debut, Ryan Hanigan homered for the first time in almost three months and the Rays stopped Toronto's four-game winning streak.
Karns (1-0) allowed two hits in seven innings. He struck out a career-high eight and walked two.
Jake McGee worked the eighth, and Grant Balfour finished for his 12th save in 15 chances as the Rays won for the first time in three games.
Hanigan homered into the left-field bullpen on J.A Happ's first pitch of the third. It was Hanigan's first homer since June 16 against Baltimore.
Happ (9-10) allowed seven hits in seven innings.
PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 1, 10 INNINGS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Cody Asche hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the Phillies to the win.
Cole Hamels scattered nine hits over seven innings, and Philadelphia handed the Marlins their third straight defeat in their first game since Giancarlo Stanton was injured.
Stanton, a leading NL MVP candidate, was struck in the face Thursday night by an 88 mph fastball from Milwaukee right-hander Mike Fiers. Stanton sustained multiple facial fractures and severe lacerations as well as dental damage.
Jake Diekman (5-4) pitched a scoreless 10th to cap three hitless innings by Philadelphia relievers. Jonathan Papelbon retired the side in the ninth after Ken Giles did so in the eighth.
Asche went deep off Dan Jennings (0-2) with one out.
METS 4, NATIONALS 3
NEW YORK (AP) Juan Lagares hit a go-ahead double and the Mets made it stand up, ending a 12-game home skid against Washington.
The Mets' losing streak at Citi Field versus Washington dated to last season, and was their longest in team history against a visiting club.
Washington came close in the ninth inning. Denard Span led off with a single against Jenrry Mejia, and Asdrubal Cabrera flied out to the wall. After Span stole his 30th base, Mejia struck out Anthony Rendon, walked Adam LaRoche and then fanned Ian Desmond for his 26th save in 28 chances.
New York's Dillon Gee (7-7) allowed three runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings.
Gio Gonzalez (8-10) gave up four runs, three earned, in 6 2-3 innings for the Nationals.
BREWERS 3, REDS 2
MILWAUKEE (AP) Lyle Overbay hit a game-winning single off Jumbo Diaz with one out in the ninth inning to lift Milwaukee over Cincinnati.
Overbay sent the first pitch from Diaz (0-1) into left-center, giving the Brewers their third straight win. Milwaukee stayed 1 1/2 games back of Pittsburgh for the second NL wild card.
Jonathan Lucroy led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Diaz loaded the bases on two intentional walks to bring up Overbay.
Francisco Rodriguez (5-5) got the win.
The Reds had won three in a row.
RANGERS 2, BRAVES 1
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Robinson Chirinos hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning to lead Texas past Atlanta.
Adrian Beltre and Ryan Rua had two hits apiece as the Rangers won for only the second time in 13 games. They improved to 2-5 under interim manager Tim Bogar.
The Braves have lost four of five to drop three games behind Pittsburgh for the second NL wild card.
The decisive rally started with two outs. Beltre and Rua hit consecutive singles against David Carpenter (6-4) before Chirinos gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
Chirinos was playing for the first time after missing 10 games because of a stiff neck.
Phil Klein (1-2) got two outs for his first major league win and Neftali Feliz pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
PADRES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 5
PHOENIX (AP) Eric Stults snapped a string of three straight losses, Rene Rivera homered and San Diego extended Arizona's losing streak to seven games, its longest of the season.
Stults (7-16), tied with Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kevin Correia for most losses in the majors, allowed five runs two earned and seven hits in six innings.
A.J. Pollock had three hits for the Diamondbacks, including a three-run homer after third baseman Yangervis Solarte's two-out error.
Vidal Nuno (0-6) gave up six runs, the most in his 12 starts since coming to Arizona in a trade with the New York Yankees, where he was 2-5. Nuno allowed two or fewer runs in each of his previous five starts. The Diamondbacks are 1-11 when he starts.
Arizona put runners at first and third with two outs in the ninth against Kevin Quackenbush before pinch-hitter Aaron Hill flied out. Quackenbush got his third save as San Diego won for only the second time in nine games.
Xavier Treacy arrived as an unknown but has quickly made a name for himself.
