Badminton: Hindley opens world champs with win

Rachel Hindley opened her account at the badminton world championships with victory in Kuala Lumpur overnight.

Hindley advanced to the second round of the women's singles with a 22-20 21-17 win over Iceland's Ragna Ingolfsdottir.

John Moody couldn't match Chinese sixth seed Chen Yu in their men's first round match, doing down 13-21 11-21.

There was also a win and a loss in the mixed doubles.

Craig Cooper and Renee Flavell beat German pair Tim Dettmann and Annekatrin Lille 21-13 12-21 21-16, to set up a meeting with the Polish 10th seeds.

Daniel Shirley and his Malaysian partner Joanne Quay were knocked out in the first round by the 13th seed Indonesian pair.
