Richard Lindroos, the race director of the Auckland Marathon, said it was a huge honour to be included in that elite company.
"It is global exposure and deserved recognition that we have been doings things well here in Auckland," he said.
WorldRunning summed up the race: "Few races around the world give a better view of a city than New Zealand's Auckland Marathon.
"The highlight of the race is undoubtedly the crossing of Auckland Harbour Bridge, which is 43m above sea level and offers runners a breathtaking vista of the city spread out in front of them."
Lindroos said they prided themselves on making the Auckland Marathon not just another run but an experience. "Auckland is one of the world's most scenic city marathons with combined unique experiences such as ferry to the start, the spectacular views along the course, the Auckland Harbour Bridge crossing with views back to the city, and the finish line celebration in Victoria Park, unrivalled among other marathons in the world."
Last year's Auckland Marathon drew more than 1000 international visitors, including about 750 entrants. When international participants in 2013 were asked if they would recommend the Auckland Marathon to friends, family or colleagues, 96 per cent said yes.
Steve Brown, the event's managing director, said the marathon also helped local people rediscover the special features of their own city.
