Youth Olympics: Schmidt wins first gold for NZ in Nanjing

Dylan Schmidt of King's College is New Zealand's top male trampolinist.

King's College student Dylan Schmidt on Saturday won New Zealand's first gold medal at the Nanjing Youth Olympics.

The 17-year-old trampolinist scored 57.340, finishing ahead of home-town favourite Liu Changxin of China, who scored 56.935. Schmidt's 15.400 degree of difficulty score gave him the edge.

He is New Zealand's top male trampolinist, competing out of Auckland's Extreme Trampoline club.

It was a mixed day for New Zealand yesterday, the highlight being show jumper Emily Fraser's clear round in the first day of the equestrian competition.

Show jumping
Fraser, 18, from Feilding, had a clear round on Exilio, putting her in a strong position going in to day two.

Hockey
The women's team had a disappointing end to their medal campaign with a 7-1 loss to Japan.

Frances Davies, 17, from Tauranga, described the team as being "really quick on the turnovers", forcing the Kiwi team back on to defence.

The men's team missed out on the medal rounds, being beaten 3-0 by South Africa in the quarter-finals.

Basketball
The men's 3x3 basketball team lost 9-8 to Brazil in their first game, but bounced back to beat Romania 19-15.
