KERIKERI

Athletics New Zealand Half Marathon Championship, Okaihau to Kerikeri - 18 November 2017

Craig Lautenslager added the half marathon crown to the cross country title won in July.

Lautenslager (Nelson) had a grand battle with defending NZ half marathon champion Oska Baynes (Christchurch) with the title not decided until
the final few hundred meters. The 24 year old Lautenslager, running 1:04:58 in his first half marathon was pushed all the way by Baynes (1:05:01) with both athletes breaking the race record in less than ideal conditions. Seaton Meredith held the previous record of 1:05:14 set in 1999.

Cam Graves from Auckland finished third in a PB by over three minutes of 1:07:17.

Lautenslager paid tribute to Baynes.

"Oska was just hammering the whole time. In the last kilometre I got a little bit of a lead on him, he passed me and then I charged and held on to the finish. I was hoping to go under 1.05 and was a little surprised to get that time in the conditions. I couldnt have done that time without Oska out there," said Lautenslager.

Annika Pfitzinger, running her first half marathon since 2015, broke her personal best by almost two minutes to claim her first NZ senior title with a winning time of 1:15:58.

"I wasnt sure if I would run the race but had a good session last Saturday and decided to come up to Kerikeri. They were pretty tough conditions with a head wind most of the way, I was running in no mans land for a while and manged to reel in a some guys and work them a little which really helped me get through to the finish," said the 25 year old Pfitzinger.

Defending champion and pre-race favourite Olivia Burne (Auckland) suffered stomach problems during the race and finished second in 1:16:41, ahead of Pakurangas Penny Peskett with 1:17:13.

Mary Davies holds the womens race record of 1:15:20 set in 2003.

Lautenslager joins his mother Debbie Elsmore as mother and son national champions and Annika joins her mother Christine as mother and daughter national champions.

Simon Yarrow was the quickest in the Masters Men 35-49 grades with 1:14:48 ahead of Rick Tombling (1:15:50) and Christopher Robb (1:16:07).

Michael Wray won the 50+ Masters Men title in 1:17:46 from Alastair Prangnell (1:18:36) and Anthony Rogal (1:22:15).

In a tight contest, Sally Gibbs - fourth overall of the women competitors took out the Masters Women Championship, running 1:21:04 from Fiona Love (1:21:12) and Ady McKenzie (1:21:48).

Tim Goodwin won the associated 5km in 15:50, Max Oliviero 16:07, Paul Estival 18:05. Esther Keown 16:12, Hannah Barker 20:11, Laura Stevenson 20:25.

QUEENSTOWN

Queenstown International Marathon Festival - 18 November 2017

Samuel Wreford comfortably won the marathon in a race record 2:27:56, nearly five minutes ahead of Blair McWhirter with Jason Hall third in 2:35:19. This was a solid effort from Wreford before he tackles the Singapore marathon early next month.

Wreford almost didnt make the start line at Millbrook Resort.

"I have been battling a little bit today with a touch of the flu, and yesterday I was still marginal about running. I have an ear infection so found it tough hearing, but managed to stay healthy enough to be on the start line," he said.

Hannah Oldroyd straight from winning the Auckland marathon in 2:54:11, had the run of the race in the womens section winning in a race record 2:52:21. Last years winner Mel Aitken was second in 2:54:55 adding to her second placings in 2014 and 2015. Marisa Ruhter was third in 2:56:08 with Canadian Samantha McGlone fourth in 2:56:27.

Oldroyd was quick to label it her favourite marathon course and is already planning on defending her title next year.

"I love to race, I hate running, but I love to race! I loved the course, it was absolutely beautiful, and I will definitely be back. The first half I was taking it nice and easy and the views were stunning and then I loved the trails around the lake, I wasnt sure where I was at times, but it was amazing.

"That is the tenth event for me since Auckland I ran with friends a couple of times this week, I just love it and while you can, why not race everything," said Oldroyd.

In the half marathon race records were set by Daniel Balchin 1:07:28 and by Josie Wilcox 1:19:33.

Balchin said it was a cracker of a day.

"The plan was to sit in and see how I was feeling and then I just went off on my own and ran at my own pace. It was about 3km into the race I made a burst and I just didnt see them after that.

"I am stoked with the time, I wasnt expecting to run that quick today. While it is not a PB, it is on par for me, with a few undulations, I am very happy with that time today," said Balchin.

Wilcox said that she felt good.

"The race started conservatively until about 3 or 4k and I was finding the pace too slow, so I took off, as soon as we hit the limestone path I went for it. The crowd and the course were awesome, I really love the course. I would love a few more hills in it, I have been doing plenty of cycling lately. I havent been running that much so I am really happy," said Wilcox. Other placings in the half marathon; James Tunbridge (Australia) 1:10:54, Brett Tingay (former national steeplechase champion) 1:11:01. Emma Perron 1:22:46, Fiona Crombie (former national steeplechase champion) 1:24:11.

Dominic Channon set a race record and debut of 33:28 in winning the 10km from Sam Dobson 35:47 and Aleks Cheifetz 35:55. Karin Schank 39:02, Sarah Douglas 39:38, Bronnie Ormandy 40:59.
