OBITUARY

Alan Sayers MNZM of Whangaparaoa Auckland died on Saturday 19 August 2017 aged 101.

Sayers was the New Zealand 440 yard champion in 1937 in 49.2 seconds ranking him the second best New Zealander at that time to 1932 Olympian Stuart Black. At the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney Sayers was a member of the 4 x 440 yard relay team that won bronze. He also competed in the 220 and 440 yards at these Games. He worked for the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Star as a journalist before becoming a freelance photo-journalist.

Sayers was a successful athletic coach and two of his outstanding national champions were Ron Agate (100yds 1945/46, 220yds 1945/46/47) and Barry Robinson (440yds 1958/59/60/62).

He received the MNZM for services to sport and journalism in the 2003 Queens Birthday honours.
