OBITUARY

Accomplished masters athlete Wally Opperman of North Shore Auckland died on Saturday 8 December aged 92.

He was a foundation member of the North Shore Track and Field club established in 1972, as one of the five-person committee. In 1978 this club merged with East Coast Bays Athletics Club to form North Shore Bays Athletics which later became North Harbour Bays Athletics. He had been involved in athletics since 1940 and in 1975 when New Zealand Veterans athletics began he travelled the world to masters events with his long-time partner Margaret Peters who won many World Masters titles. In 2011 Wally won the pole vault gold medal at the WMA Championships in Sacramento.

He currently holds the NZMA M60 3000m steeplechase record of 13:22.42 set at the National Track and Field Championships in 1986 and held the National M85 pole vault record from 2007 until 2017. In 2012 he was awarded the NZMA gold award for services to masters athletics. He was made a life member of Auckland Masters Athletics in 2014.
