AUCKLAND

Athletics Auckland Meeting, Mt Smart Stadium - 8 December 2018

National womens 100m champion Zoe Hobbs went within a hundredth of a second of her personal best with a convincing win in a top class race. In favourable conditions with a slight following wind of 1.3mps Hobbs clocked 11.54. Livvy Wilson, bronze medallist in the national final in March was second in a PB 11.86 and former national 200m champion Portia Bing was third also in a PB 11.87. The depth of the field was evident with Georgia Hulls finishing fourth in 11.95, followed by Abby Goldie 12.04 and Leah Belfield 12.25. Bing had earlier won the 400m hurdles in 58.36 from Rochelle Coster 63.07 and Celine Pearn 64.39.

Hobbs later teamed up with Belfield, Hulls and Symone Tafunai for an impressive display of relay running in the 4 x 100m event covering the lap of the track in 45.95 which compares well with the New Zealand record of 44.60 by Chantal Brunner, Jane Arnott, Rebecca Wardell and Caro Hunt in Auckland in March 2001.

WELLINGTON

Scottish Night of Miles, Basin Reserve - 7 December 2018

The highlight of the competitive races was the race between Hannah Oldroyd and Deb Lynch. Oldroyd had to resist several attempts by Lynch to get past on the last lap. Each time she refused to cede her lead and held on to win by a very slim margin - both finishing in 5.03. Jessica Hughes was third in 5:26. Keiron Sexton won the men's mile. After opening up a big lead early in the race over the chasing pack he was slowly wound in by a hard-chasing Dougal Thorburn. But, with 200 metres to go and Thorburn right on his shoulder, Sexton found one more gear and won in 4.22. Thorburn recorded 4:25 and Russell Scott was third in 4:27.

The races were held on the road around the perimeter of the Basin Reserve.
