ROTORUA

Rotorua Marathon - 6 May 2017

It was a Japanese double in the Sulphur City as Saeki Makino won by a wide margin in 2:21:58 and Yuki Ogawa headed in Johanna Ottosson by just over a minute for the womens honours.

Makino set out to break 2:20 and was
soon well ahead gaining a three minute lead over Chris Sanson at the half way mark passed in 1:10:50. He carried on untroubled to cross the finish at Government Gardens over five minutes ahead of Sanson who clocked a personal best 2:27:11, to repeat his second from last year. Jono Jackson who was third in 2015 was third again in 2:32:44. It was the fastest winning time since Jonathan Wyatt recorded 2:20:50 in 2001.

Makino who won the Taipei marathon three months ago in 2:21:27 has a best time of 2:17:59 from Seoul Korea in November 2015.

Ottosson and Ogawa traded the lead up to 19km when Ogawa made a break which she held to the finish. Ogawa recorded 2:54:14, Ottosson was through the finish in 2:55:57 with Katie Wyrill, second last year, third in 3:02:21.

Japanese runners have won in the past, Katsumi Tsuchiya in 2002 in 2:25:58, Masataka Uchino in 2014 in 2:27:45 and Naoko Tsuchiya in the women in 2015 in 2:53:22.

Josh Maisey won the half marathon in 1:09:29 four minutes faster than Sam Pendriegh and Simon Cochrane. Olivia Burne the New Zealand half marathon champion won the half marathon in 1:16:27 from Erin Furness and Megan Grant. Laura Langley won the half marathon walk outright in 1:52:22.

Included in the field was Kuniyoshi Kawai from Japan who ran his 800th marathon in 6:01:36.

Over 5200 took part in the events this year from the kids mini-marathon on Friday to the full marathon.

University Relays, McKays Crossing, Paekakariki - 6 May 2017

Under 20 Men: WHAC - Phoebe McKnight, Kelsey Forman, Tessa Hunt, Imogen Skelton, were first outright of all the womens teams.

Under 20 Women: WHAC - Seamus Kane, Liam Chesney, Olaf Manz, Sam Hyde-Smith.

Senior Women: WHAC - Sarah Drought, Tamara Winkler, Alice Feslier-Holmes, Andrea Peat.

Senior Men: Wellington Scottish - Harry Burnard, Kristian Day, Niam McDonald, Rowan Hooper

Masters Women: Olympic - Michelle Van Looy, Meredith Ogilvie, Tracy Berghan, Deb Platts-Fowler.

Masters Men 40-49: Wellington Scottish - Andrew Wharton, Dave Parsons, Brendon Thompson, Stephen Day who ran a great last leg to chase down WHAC.

Masters Men 50+: Wellington Scottish - Dave Kettles, James Turner, Michael Wray, Peter Stevens.

DUNEDIN

Athletics Otago Athlete of the Year Awards - 3 May 2017

Anna Grimaldi scooped the pool at the awards evening, winning the para-athlete of the year, the senior athlete of the year and the overall Otago athlete of the year. Raylene Bates received the coach of the year. Winter athletes of the year went to Oli Chignell and Mel Aitken. Felix McDonald received the junior summer athlete award and Malcolm Giles and Marion Harris were joint winners of the contribution to athletics award.

OSU High Performance, Corvallis OR, 29 April: Grace McConnochie 5000m 16:50.16 (10).

USA v UCLA, Los Angeles CA, 29 April: Torie Owers SP 16.74m (2), DT 46.02m PB (3), HT 50.85m (3).

Payton Jordan Invitational, Stanford CA, 5 May: Camille Buscomb sliced 41 seconds off her personal best 10,000m with a London World Championships qualifying performance of 31:45.02 (9). This is well under the A standard of 32:15.00 and elevates her to number three on the all-time womens list behind Kimberley Smith and Nyla Carroll.

Angie Petty was second in the 800m in 2:02.92 and Rosa Flanagan was 13th in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:23.24.

Arkansas Twilight, Fayetteville AR, 5 May: Bailey Stewart 200m 21.49 (+1.4) PB (1RB). Craig Lautenslager 1500m 3:46.91 PB (4).

Ivy League Championships, New Haven CT, 6 May: Joshua Billington 100m 10.75 (+3.0) (4R2). Arianna Lord 800m 2:13.67 (4R1). Julia Ratcliffe HT 69.24m (1).

American East Championships, Durham NC, 6 May: Holly Manning 800m 2:14.06 (3).
