Former World U18 silver medallist and three-time national senior 110m hurdles champion Josh Hawkins is next cab off the rank to answer our Five Minutes With questions.

What is your best athletics quality?

Physically, my best athletics quality would be my long leg length because it helps me get over the high hurdles easier. Mentally, my best quality would be the motivation to find my absolute limit.

Why would you encourage anyone to try athletics?

Athletics is a unique sport where you compete as an individual (aside from relays) but make so many friends at the same time. Athletics also allows you to try to become your best, because it's easily measured. Nothing beats the feeling of achieving a PB.

Who was your first coach and how did they influence your career?

My first coach is still my current coach, Joe Hunter. He has had a huge influence on my career by teaching lessons that have crossed over into my non-athletics life. Patience and trusting the process are key both in athletics and life.

What are your athletics weaknesses?

You can always be more flexible as a hurdler. So, I would say one of my strengths, is also probably one of my weaknesses.

What is the funniest things you've seen on an athletics track?

The funniest thing I've seen on a track would have to be a good hurdle fail. Unfortunately, I have been on the end of the joke several times but it's all in good fun. My most memorable fall happened the day after one of my biggest exams at university. I was doing a drill and my lead leg went up over the hurdle and my trail leg decided it had enough. I essentially sat on the hurdle while running at full pace!

What is your favourite athletics session?

Hurdles speed. Usually I would go over six hurdles. Short and sharp. I like this session because I don't need to conserve energy. I can go all out. It's like testing your limits on a weekly basis.

What is the greatest thing you've witnessed in an athletic stadium?

Probably at the 2017 World University Games when the Games record was broken three times. With the gold and silver medallists (Cheng Chao-tsun of Chinese Taipei 91.36m and Andreas Hoffman of Germany 91.07m) throwing over 90m. Incredible.

Who has been your toughest rival?

My toughest rival would have to be one of my good friends from high school, Tim Payne. We always used to go head to head in all the school races. The best things about rivalries is that it brings out the best in you.

If you could star in another sport which sport would it be?

Basketball. The NBA is an interesting sport where anything can happen, sometimes the worst team can beat the best team. There so many things to achieve and aim for both as an individual and as a team. As well all-time records.

When travelling to a meeting what is the most important item in your suitcase?

My phone. I can type if a need to and also check the time to make sure I'm not late.

What is your greatest regret?

Probably, not keeping my Harry Potter books in the best condition. While, this may not be an obvious regret to many, the Harry Potter series holds a special place in many memories (particularly people around my age). Having those books in good condition would satisfy the nostalgia in me, as I can always revisit them later and experience them the same way I did many years ago.

Who is the person who most admire?

The head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popavich. He has a really interesting perspective on life and it intrigues me watching documentaries and reading about him.

What are you most scared of?

Spiders. I have no idea why spiders are scary to me. There's something about eight legs that's just not normal!

What is your favourite movie and why?

Blood Diamond with Leonardo Di Caprio. It's powerful.

When was the last time you looked at your athletics medals?

Late 2016? I'm not actually sure.
