Athletics: 101-year-old makes history at veteran games

A 101-year-old Australian man has set a new world record today at the World Veterans Games in Brisbane.

Running the 1500m, Les Amey won the 100 years-and-over category, completing the race in 19 minutes, 59 seconds.

As no one his age had ever run the race before, Amey is now the world record holder for the age group.

Mr Amey, from Brisbane, said he had never won anything in his previous three years of competitive athletics.

As the only competitor in his age-group, Amey also won the gold medal.

He said he could have run further after finishing the race, but was looking forward to a holiday to celebrate his triumph.
