All Blacks 1989 signed ball up for sale

An iconic item of All Blacks memorabilia, a ball signed by Buck Shelford's great side of 1989, could be yours.

The ball, signed by the entire squad who defeated Australia at Eden Park in August 1989, is being offered for sale by the Salvation Army Family Store in Gisborne.

Manager Heidi Parkes said the ball was donated to the Salvation Army by a kind benefactor.

Revered All Black captain Buck Shelford never lost a test as captain and led his side to a 24-12 victory over the Wallabies.

There are signatures on the ball from some legendary All Blacks, many of them having played in the side who won the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987.

The late 1980s was a great era in New Zealand rugby, with the All Blacks undefeated in 23 consecutive test matches from 1987 to 1990.

In addition to Shelford, other players featured on the football include Sean Fitzpatrick, brothers Alan and Gary Whetton, Grant Fox, Joe Stanley, John Kirwan and John Gallagher.

There are signatures from the reserves bench such as Frano Botica, Zinzan Brooke, current Wales and 2013 victorious Lions coach Warren Gatland, and then-All Blacks coach Grizz Wyllie.

The Wallabies side in that test included Steve Cutler, Simon Poidevin, Nick Farr-Jones, Michael Lynagh and Greg Martin while Phil Kearns and the great Tim Horan were making their test debuts.

Ms Parkes said interested parties could phone the Salvation Army Family Store and make an offer or go into the shop - near the town clock - and enter a bid in the provided box.
