Thousands of free meals will be prepared by charities in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch over the next three months thanks to an "eat real and give a meal" programme.
The brainchild of Kiwi Delish, a new food box which has just launched in New Zealand, the programme is promising to make a real difference to hungry New Zealanders all around the country.
For every four food boxes purchased Kiwi Delish will give up to four meals to Kiwis in need through its charity partners, the Auckland City Mission, the Christchurch City Mission and Kaibosh in Wellington to help them prepare the meals.
A company spokesperson says: "We're pleased to be able to step forward and make a small difference – it's about being able to make a tangible impact to these organisations.
"The amount of pressure they're under is tremendous and sadly the demand is getting higher and higher. We saw a real need in that area and were able to step up and take a lead."
The age-old quandary of figuring out what's for dinner just became a whole lot easier with the Kiwi Delish launch of its range of nutritious meals.
Its key focus is on hearty, affordable meals inspired by global flavours. You'll find the odd Kiwi classic - such as steak and mash - but most meals on offer have an international feel from pork belly fried rice to tandoori chicken salad or mouth-watering Mexican-style chipotle bean and lime aioli tacos.
And with winter on the way the spokesperson says they will also be providing warming soups, stews and dishes like Thai yellow chicken curry.
For those short on time, each meal will be ready in around 20 minutes. The food prep and the number of ingredients are intentionally kept simple to maximise flavours – and evening free time.
Kiwi Delish is also taking a lead when it comes to packaging. Food products are kept chilled with Woolcool insulation – a natural product made from waste wool that reduces the need for excessive use of plastic ice packs.
The company also aims to keep superfluous waste to a minimum whether by ditching unnecessary produce bags or simply refusing to print paper recipe cards. This keeps paper waste at bay and makes it easy for customers to find and refer back to their favourite recipes online.
Available nation-wide and ringing in at $3.99 per plate in the first week, Kiwi Delish is the perfect solution for Kiwis with busy lives and those dinner-time dilemmas - and comes with the lowest price tag of any of the plethora of food box businesses, says the spokesperson.
"So ditch the temptations of the takeaway culture and try the delights of real, easy, home-cooked food with a conscience."
