Young Auckland millennials - those aged in their 20s and 30s - love eating out and spend more on this than they do on groceries.
On average they eat out a staggering 25 times a month parting with $435 in the process, an amount slightly more than the $424 they spend on groceries, according to figures from Westpac's new CashNav app.
Wellington millennials are the second highest spenders on eating out - an average of $399 a month - while those in Southland are the lowest, shelling out an average of $269.
While figures like these may reinforce the stereotypes around Aucklanders - and hit them hard in the pocket - there are interesting results from other regions.
It seems that there may be a few budding Masterchefs in Southland, as their grocery bills run to an average of $538 a month, compared to the $424 of their counterparts in Auckland.
Westpac's CashNav app works by giving users the ability to track their daily spending habits. It categorises what they've spent their money on, allowing them to identify the danger signs of possible overspending.
If their spending is higher than usual in a particular month, the app will also notify them of this.
CashNav is arranged into categories including travel, groceries, dining out, health and entertainment, so people can see at a glance where their money is going. This information can be used to inform spending choices and make better decisions around money.
Westpac GM of marketing, products and transformation Andrew Kerr says CashNav was developed to help people manage their money better to achieve their savings goals and enable them to buy things they really want.
"Often you fritter away small amounts during the month without realising how it all adds up," he says.
"CashNav tracks your key spending categories so you have the ability to cut back if this means you're not achieving your savings goals or not able to buy other things."
He says users also have the option of choosing to receive notifications when they spend money at a retailer, ensuring they are charged the correct amount.
"Each time you spend you have the option of getting a notification which shows where and how much you've spent. This means you can check you're being charged the correct amount or not being charged more than once as sometimes happens."
Kerr says a lot of people are very surprised once they find out exactly how much they spend: "People have made comments like 'I had no idea how much I was spending on eating out' and 'it's the little things that add up - you don't realise it until you see the amount at the end of the month'," he says.
He says once people are aware of how much they spend, they can more effectively reach their savings goals.
"This spending insight gives you the ability to cut back if it means you're not achieving your savings goals or not able to buy the things you really want."
